Dealing with Life’s Curve Balls

How to Embrace New Chapters in Your Life

As we all know, life is rarely a smooth path. It is full of ups and downs. Often changes happen when you least expect them, and you end up with your routines and your life being completely upturned.

That’s how it often is when new chapters are opened up in your life. You might get taken by surprise, and immediately get flustered because you’ve never dealt with a situation like that before. Situations like losing your job, a sudden health scare, your best friend moving away or your partner having an affair.

Or maybe it’s just a phase of life that creeps up on you without you realising; your children become teenagers and turn into different people, your parents suddenly seem to be frail and elderly and need a great deal of care, you reach mid-life and the menopause appears.

It’s easy to lose composure and panic when you’re going through something totally new to you. It’s easy to give up and wallow in despair because you feel like you’ve lost control of your life.

However you can approach these life events with positive techniques that keep you from feeling intimidated by them.

Try some of  these strategies to not only deal with, but also embrace, these new chapters in your life:

Have an open mind.

Expect the best scenario instead of the worst. Remind yourself that you’ve made it through challenging situations before. As the saying goes ‘ Every cloud has a silver lining’. Embrace the idea that this event might bring with it all sorts of positive spins on existing situations that challenge you. This new chapter in your life could be the catalyst you need to set you on your way to reaching those goals which previously seemed unobtainable.

Exercise courage.

Fear can keep you from achieving what you want out of life.Fear can prevent many of us from reaching our true potential, or even from trying. Don’t let yourself be held back by fear. Even when you’re not feeling courageous, tell yourself you’re brave. Walk into a situation while repeating the words, “I have what it takes to conquer this.”

Take one step at a time.

By far, the easiest way to approach any situation in life is to break it down into its smallest parts. When looking at the big picture of your life changes, it might seem mammoth and insurmountable. But if you take a minute to dissect it, you’ll realise it’s a lot easier to take smaller steps. As the saying goes: ‘ How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!’

Learn from past mistakes.

Nobody has more experience in your life than you do! You know your strengths and abilities, and you also know where you went wrong before. Those experiences and lessons should be the tools you take into life’s new chapter.

Be honest.

If your new chapter in life is something being presented to you by someone else, be honest about feeling intimidated by it. If you’re expected to tackle it and come out victorious, you definitely don’t want to disappoint! It’s better to state your position up front because people tend to respect honesty even when it doesn’t always help them.

New chapters don’t have to be scary at all.

You might surprise yourself at how perfectly capable you are of taking things head-on and relishing in the benefits they can provide. As they say,  ‘ You are never given anything in life to deal with that you can’t handle’. Give yourself the chance to experience fulfillment; use these strategies to embrace new chapters like you already know the outcome!
